Spring has arrived with the early trees bursting into leaf, giving folks who notice these things, that special feel good feeling. As a friend kindly wrote to me today:
“We have a year of the White Tiger since the year falls within the 10 multiples. Year of White Tiger means a year of change, so my wish is for you to change for even better fortune and certainly for a healthy new year”.
This is our wish to you too, to all the art loving populace who loyally read this monthly newsletter.

The Myanmar Contemporary Art 2010 exhibition has just finished at The Rotunda, Central, Hong Kong. This is an annual event which features the work of established master artists alongside the latest paintings by selected emerging artists. This event was well received and continues until the end of the March at our Sik On Street gallery.

Some 30 paintings are hanging at the gallery, predominantly painted by 6 of Myanmar’s best up and coming young artists.

At these prominent public exhibitions we are asked many times about the process and direction when buying art for the first time and what the strategy should be in setting up an art collection. Most of the people who ask these ‘impossible to answer’ questions have no formal art training and have a loss of confidence, brought on mainly by studying the waffle created by high profile curators who, generally for their own reasons, make art complicated instead of enjoyable.

Each art buyer has a personal perspective as to the type of painting or sculpture which appeals to his or her feelings at any one time. There is no ‘one size fits all’ in the art world, it has to be the most subjective topic ever created by inventive individuals for creative thinking people to appreciate.

As in all areas, where impulse buying is very much part of the process, the art world has always been at the forefront of the ‘buyer beware’ syndrome. To try and allay the fears of the first time art buyer, we have put our thoughts together in the form of a check list – we hope this will help in some small way.

Some points to consider before buying the painting are listed in our March Newsletter.
